In order to achieve the targets defined within the 2050 Energy Strategy, the whole Swiss ecosystem needs to move in coordination and roles and responsibilities needs to be clear. At the end of the day, this is a team work and at GridSphere we know the importance of understanding the key players of the game.
In this article you will find a big-picture kind of presentation of the key stakeholders involved, so to give you a general understanding of the ecosystem. We might simplify some concepts from time to time, in order to keep this article short and focused.
At the end of this article you’ll be able to download a Stakeholders Map, showing interactions and dependencies between the actors that, at different levels, are taking part in this transformation.
GridSphere is a pure Energy Storage player. The 2050 strategy talks about sustainable, reliable and efficient energy, and Batteries are an enabler of a higher renewable energy penetration, providing flexibility and stability to a grid weakened by the decommissioning of conventional energy generation and challenged by the distributed generation reality.
Who Should be looking at Energy Storage? The simple answer is ” the whole ecosystem”. From Grid operators challenged by Prosumer load profiles to IPP getting hit by negative prices – driven by renewable energy over supply during the day – or private users (both residential and industrial) disappointed by the decline revenues and ROI of their PV investment.
GridSphere can help you address that, just send us a line at info@gridsphere.energy
Once the Rules of the Game are set, through laws, ordinances and active vigilance, the Market & Regulation takes part, as the system works only if there is clarity, vigilance and access to the market for new technologies like Energy Storage. Let’s go through some of the actors of this fashinating game.
FEDERAL COUNCIL. Determines the 2050 targets. Issued the 2050 Swiss Energy Strategy (read it here: https://www.bfe.admin.ch/bfe/it/home/politica/strategia-energetica-2050.html )
DATEC. Leads the Energy Strategy, coordinating UFE, ElCom, ESTI.
UFE/BFE. DATEC’s competency center. develops statistics, incentive programs and technical guidelines. Drafted OEne, OAEl, OPEn, to be issued by Federal Council.
SVIZZERAENERGIA. UFE’s program, shares best practices and can co-finance pilot projects within Cantons, Municipalities and Associations, accelerating PV+BESS adoption.
FDF/FOCBS. Establishes customs rules that batteries must respect when imported.
ElCom. With a role of vigilance over TSO (SwissGrid) and the 640 DSO, ElCom guarantees transparency, have a look at ElCom website, it is one of our primary source of information. (https://www.elcom.admin.ch/elcom/en/home.html)
ESTI. Federal Institution that certifies components, focusing on the safety of electrical installations, including Battery Energy Storage Systems.
TSO & DSO. SwissGrid, with the Transmission Code 2019, together with the 630+ Swiss DSOs, are responsible to manage the transmission and distribution grid, delivering energy to any user in Switzerland. With the growth of distributed generation, their role is becoming more and more important, and technologies like Energy Storage can help them address their biggest challenges.
CANTONS AND MUNICIPALITIES. True enabler of the transition, they can provide local incentives and issue local regulations.
INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS. They take the voice of the companies right into the federal consultation, and also sharing best practices, experiences and technical standards between the interested parties.
